Center for Innovation to Implementation (Ci2i)

The mission of the Center for Innovation to Implementation (Ci2i) is to foster high-value health care for Veterans. We will do so by identifying opportunities to improve value, and by testing the implementation of innovations that respond to those opportunities, both crucial activities for any learning health care system. Organized around three foci, our research addresses priority areas for HSR&D and the VA leadership.

Our three research foci are:

  • Fostering high-value mental health care.
  • Fostering high-value medical and surgical specialty care.
  • Fostering high-value care beyond the VA.

Research Highlights

The table below highlights current Ci2i activity by Secretarial and HSR&D priority. The lead investigator is listed in parentheses.

Additional Research Activities and Special Populations

Ci2i is a highly productive center, with 123 current active projects, many of which do not fall directly within our three focus areas. Here are highlights that fall outside of our three research foci.

Women’s Health

  • Women’s Health Practice-Based Research (PBRN) Network Coordinating Center (Frayne)
  • Women’s Health Evaluation Initiative (WHEI) (Frayne/Phibbs)

Geriatrics/Palliative Care

  • Geriatrics and Extended Care Data Analysis Center (Phibbs, Associate Director)
  • Geriatrics Research Education Clinical Center (GRECC) (Tamura/Goldstein)
  • Quality Improvement Resource Center for Palliative Care (Lorenz)

Veteran Engagement Strategy

Ci2i has been a leader in involving Veterans in vetting our research. The leader of our Veteran Engagement Council, Travis Runnels, has actively participated on our COIN Steering Committee for five years. Mr. Runnels is both a disabled Veteran and a Family Centered Care Specialist. Consistent with modern theories of stakeholder engagement, we involve Veterans in all stages of research formulation, execution, and interpretation. Ci2i investigators present nearly every project before submission to the Council, for example, and the conversation improves the work. In addition, Ci2i leadership meets annually with the Council to review Ci2i’s progress, discuss planned projects, and propose priorities for future efforts. The reason we study value is to optimize care for Veterans: by bringing Veterans to the table, we ensure that their voices are heard and that our research remains patient-centered and attentive to the preferences of those we serve.1
