Matthew Boden, PhD

My professional interests are rooted in the research, evaluation and implementation of evidence-based treatments supporting the mental and physical wellbeing of adults with mental disorders, military veterans, and people with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. As a Senior Evaluator at the Program Evaluation and Resource Center (PERC), VA Office of Mental Health & Suicide Prevention (OMHSP), I support OMHSP’s nationwide program evaluation and quality improvement efforts, including in a leadership role on projects related to mental health staffing and productivity.

As a Health Science Specialist at the Center for Innovation to Implementation (Ci2i), Veterans Affairs (VA) Palo Alto Health Care System, I investigate the clinical effects and implementation of evidence-based psychosocial treatments for substance use, anxiety and psychotic disorders. I initially developed theory and conducted experimental and cross-sectional studies on malleable mechanisms underlying these disorders, such as maladaptive beliefs, problems with emotion regulation, and maladaptive patterns of emotional awareness. I transitioned to investigating these mechanisms as predictors, mediators or moderators of clinical change (or lack thereof) in longitudinal and treatment studies. I have conducted or been a member of a team conducting clinical trials investigating several types of psychotherapy (e.g., Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Psilocybin-assisted group therapy) implemented in multiple contexts (e.g., outpatient mental health clinic, acute-inpatient facility) for various types of psychopathology (e.g. substance use disorder, psychosis). More recently, I have investigated (a) the relations between mental health staffing and productivity and patient (e.g., mental health treatment performance) and clinician outcomes (e.g., burnout), and (b) the mental health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I have expertise in a variety of psychological assessment methods, study designs and statistical analyses. I am a California-licensed psychologist practicing evidence-based psychotherapies. Supporting these endeavors, I completed a bachelor’s degree at the University of San Francisco, then a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. I received additional training through a predoctoral internship at VA Palo Alto Health Care System, and a postdoctoral internship at Stanford University.
