Dr. Manjula Kurella Tamura, MD, MPH, is Director of the Geriatric Research and Education Clinical Center (GRECC) at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System and Professor of Medicine at Stanford University. She is clinically trained as a nephrologist, and received her medical degree from Albany Medical College and a Master in Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley. At GRECC, Dr. Tamura leads a multi-disciplinary research program addressing the intersection of aging and chronic disease. Her own research focuses on defining optimal chronic kidney disease care for older adults. The health services component evaluates the benefits and potential harms of dialysis treatment, using a patient-centered framework to measure outcomes relevant to older adults. These studies take advantage of her team’s experience creatively leveraging big data sources such as Medicare claims and electronic health records, as well as prospective investigations in major kidney disease cohorts and clinical trials. The interventions component of Dr. Tamura’s research program aims to design and test interventions to improve dialysis decision making and chronic kidney disease care.
