Center for Innovation to Implementation (Ci2i)

Dr. Midboe is a Principal Investigator at Ci2i, VA Palo Alto Health Care System. She received her PhD in clinical/health psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. She completed a medical informatics postdoctoral fellowship at Ci2i and Stanford University before becoming an investigator at Ci2i. Her work includes an array of research and quality improvement activities focused on improving care for veterans with chronic disease, including those impacted by the opioid epidemic.

Dr. Midboe receives some of her funding from the VA’s Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) and some from the VA’s HSR&D program. Her work focuses in part on implementation and evaluation of a variety of evidence-based approaches to address risky opioid prescribing practices as well as opioid use disorder in veterans. She focuses some of her work on vulnerable populations, including veterans who are justice-involved and homeless or unstably housed. Dr. Midboe is currently leading a QUERI-funded implementation trial examining opioid overdose and education and naloxone distribution (OEND) for veterans in HUD-VASH. In addition to implementation trials, she leads HSR&D-research focused on understanding how veterans living with HIV use the VA’s tethered personal health record (My HealtheVet).

In addition to research, Dr. Midboe mentors HSR&D/Stanford University postdoctoral fellows and teaches in the research training program for fellows and clinical psychology interns. She serves on multiple conference committees related to implementation science/health services research and serves as a grant reviewer across multiple scientific organizations. She leads the Implementation Science Workgroup for the NIH-VA-DoD Pain Management Collaboratory, which is a consortium of 11 pragmatic and implementation trials focused on non-pharmacologic treatment for pain. She is an invited speaker at national venues and lectures in implementation science at Stanford University.
